Our History

In early 1975 several residents of North Hanover Township were interested in establishing a fire company. In March of 1975 the Township Committee created the North Hanover Fire Protective Association whose officers were John Kosztyu, William Matthews, Frank McHugh, Jesse Woolverton, and John Gilmer.

Shortly thereafter, Cookstown Volunteer Fire Company approached the organization and offered to house in our Township their soon to be replaced 1953 Ford Pumper to start a fire company substation in Jacobstown. In the fall of 1975 the Jacobstown Substation of the Cookstown Volunteer Fire Company was created and the 53 Ford Pumper was housed in the Township garage behind the municipal building. The original ten members of the Jacobstown Station were: John Kostzyu (Chief), George Freidman, Robert Gancarz, John Gilmer, Mel Heidel, Norman Kramer, Teddy Kucowski, Milton Laird, Peter Stokey, and Jesse Woolverton.

In 1976, two acres of land (our present site), were granted by Joseph Smiley to the Township for use in building a firehouse. At the same time, the Township approved the purchase of a 1979 Hahn which would serve as the primary attack pumper. In the fall of 1979, the Township Committee, members of the Fire Company, and local residents donated time, materials, and labor to build the current firehouse for a total less than $70,000. BRC Construction did an excellent job on all the stations concrete work and when the Hahn arrived late in 1979, the new Fire Station was ready to welcome it in early 1980.

To fill up another bay at the firehouse, Chesterfield Hose Co. Donated a 1954 Mack Tractor which they had recently replaced with a newer truck and we received an old Hess oil tanker which was converted into a 5500 gallon water tanker. In 1983 this truck was donated to Juliustown Fire Company for parts when we took delivery on our 1983 GMC 4-Guys 3500 Gallon/1000gpm straight tanker. It was the first tanker in the area to utilize and carry a collapsible tank.

Through the next several years, both stations (Cookstown and Jacobstown) had grown. Since our inception in Jacobstown and an original offshoot of Cookstown Fire Company, the feeling of going out on our own finally came to a decision on July 30, 1984

The Jacobstown Volunteer Fire Company #1 of North Hanover Township was officially recognized and incorporated in August of 1984. On January 1, 1985 the new Fire Company was on it's own. Larry Myroncuk became the company's first president and John Gilmer the first Chief.

In October of 1985, Belasco Petroleum donated sufficient money to the Fire Company to purchase a used Fruehauf trailer and equipment to put together a mobile foam unit to haul 300 gallons of AFFF foam.

The Fire Company continued to grow and in 1990, the Township purchased a 1990 Salisbury/Utilimaster Special Services Unit. It was outfitted with hazardous material equipment, light rescue equipment, 6 additional SCBA units, and three radios for use as a command post.

With the area growing and the amount of responses increasing, the members of the Fire Company were aware of the need for a new Pumper. A committee was formed in 1995 to design a truck and find a source of funding.

In September of 1996, the Jacobstown Volunteer Fire Company along with North Hanover Township placed an order for a New Lexington Pumper. On July 12, 1997 the Jacobstown Volunteer Fire Company took delivery of it's new pumper.

We're proud to serve and protect the residents and visitors to North Hanover Township.
